The Big Six Namaqualand Flower Tour is an eight-day, seven-night owner-guided journey from Johannesburg through the Northern Cape, Namaqualand, Nieuwoudtville and South Africa’s spectacular West Coast.
The expedition includes Kakamas, Augrabies Falls, Springbok, Namaqua National Park, Skilpad, Lambert’s Bay, Clanwilliam, Biedouw Valley, Vanrhyns Pass, Calvinia and Kimberley.
Because wildflower displays change according to winter rainfall, temperature and sunshine, Pieter adjusts the daily flower-viewing route to pursue the strongest available blooms during each departure.

Our expedition begins with an early departure from OR Tambo International Airport. We travel west through South Africa’s vast interior, passing Vryburg before continuing through the open landscapes of the Northern Cape.
We continue through Upington and follow the Orange River towards Kakamas. This important travelling day positions us perfectly for the following morning’s visit to Augrabies Falls and the beginning of our Northern Cape adventure.

Kakamas → Augrabies → Pella → Carstens Farm → Pofadder → Springbok
After breakfast, we visit the spectacular Augrabies Falls National Park, where the Orange River plunges through a dramatic granite gorge. Time is allowed to enjoy the viewpoints and appreciate one of South Africa’s most impressive natural landmarks.
We then continue towards the historic Pella Mission and visit Carstens Date Farm, where date palms flourish in the dry Northern Cape landscape.
Our journey continues through Pofadder and the wide-open landscapes of Bushmanland before arriving in Springbok, the historic centre of Namaqualand.

Chapter Three
Springbok → Kamieskroon → Skilpad → Garies → Clanwilliam → Lambert’s Bay
Today we travel south through the heart of Namaqualand towards Kamieskroon and the famous Skilpad section of Namaqua National Park.
When conditions are favourable, Skilpad offers some of the region’s most memorable flower fields. We enjoy time for photography, flower viewing and appreciating the remarkable diversity of this semi-desert landscape.
We continue south through Garies and Clanwilliam before turning west towards the Atlantic Ocean and the fishing village of Lambert’s Bay.

Lambert’s Bay → Elands Bay → Paternoster → Lambert’s Bay
We travel south along the West Coast to Elands Bay and continue towards Paternoster, one of South Africa’s most recognisable coastal villages.
Whitewashed cottages, fishing boats, Atlantic Ocean views and coastal landscapes create a beautiful contrast to the inland flower fields of Namaqualand.
Depending on seasonal conditions, we also stop at suitable coastal flower displays before returning to Lambert’s Bay for another relaxed evening beside the Atlantic Ocean.

Chapter Five
Lambert’s Bay → Clanwilliam → Biedouw Valley → Wupperthal → Lambert’s Bay
We return to Clanwilliam, the heart of South Africa’s rooibos-growing region, where we visit the Rooibos Tea Restaurant and learn more about this uniquely South African plant.
From Clanwilliam, we travel through dramatic mountain landscapes towards the Biedouw Valley. During a favourable flower season, this secluded valley can become one of the most beautiful flower-viewing areas on the entire journey.
We continue to the historic settlement of Wupperthal before returning through the mountains to Lambert’s Bay for our third and final night on the West Coast.

We leave Lambert’s Bay and travel inland through Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp, crossing the unusual quartz landscapes of the Knersvlakte.
We climb the spectacular Vanrhyns Pass onto the Bokkeveld Plateau and reach Nieuwoudtville, widely known as the bulb capital of the world.
From Nieuwoudtville, we travel along the Loeriesfontein road and turn north to visit the remarkable Kokerboom Forest, where quiver trees rise above the rocky Northern Cape landscape.
We then return towards the main route and continue north to Calvinia, where we overnight beneath the enormous skies of the Hantam Karoo.

Calvinia → Britstown → Kimberley
We leave Calvinia and continue through the wide-open landscapes of the Great Karoo towards Britstown.

We continue north-east to Kimberley, the historic city whose diamond discoveries played an important role in shaping modern South Africa.

We begin the final day with a visit to Kimberley’s world-famous Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum. Here, guests discover the story of South Africa’s diamond rush and the people who transformed this once-quiet region.
After our visit, we travel east across the interior towards Gauteng. Our unforgettable eight-day expedition ends at OR Tambo International Airport.

Springbok is the historic centre of Namaqualand and the gateway to some of South Africa’s most celebrated flower regions. Our stay here places us close to Kamieskroon, Namaqua National Park and the famous Skilpad flower area.

Three Nights Beside the Atlantic Ocean
Instead of changing accommodation every day, we stay for three nights in Lambert’s Bay. This creates a relaxed base from which to explore the West Coast, Elands Bay, Paternoster, Clanwilliam, Biedouw Valley, Wupperthal and surrounding flower regions.
Guests return each evening to the peaceful atmosphere of Lambert’s Bay, with more time to enjoy the journey and less time spent packing and unpacking.

After travelling through Vanrhyns Pass, Nieuwoudtville and the remarkable Kokerboom Forest, we continue to Calvinia for a peaceful evening in one of the Northern Cape’s most distinctive Karoo towns.

Calvinia provides a natural overnight stop between the Bokkeveld flower region and our journey across the Great Karoo towards Kimberley.
Kimberley • Diamond Fields
Where South Africa’s Diamond Story Began
Our final overnight stay takes us to historic Kimberley. After travelling through the Great Karoo and Diamond Fields, guests can relax before visiting the famous Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum the following morning.

Staying in Kimberley allows us to visit its most important historic attractions before beginning the final journey back to OR Tambo International Airport.

Namaqualand is not covered by only one kind of flower. Its spring landscape is a colourful botanical tapestry containing daisies, bulbs, succulents and many smaller flowers waiting to be discovered.
The flowers seen on each tour depend on winter rainfall, temperature, sunshine and the timing of the season. Every departure therefore offers a slightly different experience.

One of the most recognisable flowers of the region. In a favourable season, these brilliant orange daisies can cover large areas and create spectacular carpets of colour.

The day begins with fresh coffee while the first light touches the mountains. Before leaving, we study the sunshine forecast, local weather and current flower reports. Today's route depends on where nature is offering her best display.
The Search Begins
Quiet country roads wind through mountains, valleys and open plains. Every bend may reveal another hillside covered in colour. The excitement grows with every kilometre as we watch the light, temperature and landscape.
The Moment We Wait For
Suddenly the landscape changes. Millions of flowers may stretch across a valley or sweep over a hillside. The vehicle stops, cameras come out and, for a few moments, nobody needs to speak. Nature has done all the talking.
Time to Explore

I personally monitor flowering conditions before and during every departure. Where practical, I adjust our daily route to visit the areas showing the strongest displays.

Absolutely. Whether you use a mobile phone or professional camera equipment, there will be many opportunities to photograph flower fields, mountain passes, coastal scenery, wildlife, sunsets and historic towns.
We make regular photographic stops and do not rush guests through the best locations.
Rain is one of the reasons the Namaqualand flower season exists. Flowers often remain closed during cold or overcast weather and open again when the sun appears.
Where possible, I use current weather and flower reports to adjust our sightseeing route. Flexibility is one of the benefits of travelling on a personally guided small-group tour.

All Big Six Tour Safaris are personally guided by Pieter Strydom and are conducted in English and Afrikaans.
English is the primary language used during the tour, making it easy for international visitors to follow the commentary, ask questions and enjoy the complete experience.
Afrikaans-speaking guests are equally welcome, and I am happy to guide and answer questions in Afrikaans whenever appropriate.
Because our groups are small, there is plenty of opportunity for personal conversation, questions and individual attention.

Accommodation is normally based on two guests sharing a room. Single-room arrangements may be available at an additional cost.
