Meet Pieter Strydom

Registered tourist guide and founder of Big Six Tour Safaris, based in Johannesburg and guiding guests across South Africa and neighbouring countries.

My Story

I grew up with a deep appreciation for the open spaces, wildlife and people of Southern Africa. Over the years, what began as a personal love for road trips and parks naturally grew into guiding friends, visitors and small groups on journeys through South Africa and its neighbours.

Today, as a registered tourist guide based in Johannesburg, I operate Big Six Tour Safaris, specialising in small-group and private tours to destinations such as Kruger National Park, Swaziland (Eswatini), Mozambique, Lesotho, Cape Town, Namibia and Victoria Falls. Each itinerary is planned carefully around what you would like to see, your timeframe and your comfort level.

My approach has always been simple: combine careful planning with flexibility, share honest local insight, and treat each guest the way I would want my own family to be treated when travelling abroad.

Whether we are on a game drive in Kruger, walking in Mlilwane, crossing the Mozambique border or watching the sunset over Cape Town, my aim is to help you experience Southern Africa in a way that feels authentic, safe and personal.

Guiding Philosophy

Every guest is different. Some guests are on their first visit to Africa, others have travelled the region many times. Some love early mornings and long game drives; others prefer a slower pace, time for photography or simply to sit at camp and watch the world go by.

My goal is to listen carefully to what you hope to experience, then suggest realistic routes that fit your available time and budget. I prefer quality over speed: fewer rushed stops and more moments where you can truly take in the scenery, the wildlife and the people we meet.

Safety and comfort are always important. Routes are planned sensibly, accommodation is chosen with care, and we travel with respect for the communities and environments we pass through.

How I Plan Your Tour

  1. You send an enquiry – ideally with your travel dates, number of people and which areas interest you most (for example Kruger, Swaziland, Mozambique, Cape Town or Namibia).
  2. I suggest a route – based on my experience of distances, border posts, park entry times and seasonal conditions, I’ll send a suggested outline with honest comments about what is feasible.
  3. We refine the plan together – you’re welcome to ask questions, adjust the pace, add or remove nights and combine different areas, such as Kruger with Victoria Falls.
  4. Once you’re happy, we confirm – when you are ready, a deposit is paid to secure dates according to the Terms & Conditions, and I finalise arrangements with lodges and partners.

Key Destinations I Guide

Big Six Tour Safaris focuses on routes that can be realistically and comfortably travelled from Johannesburg, often combining several regions in one trip. Some of the main tour areas include:

Kruger National Park

2–5 day Kruger safaris from Johannesburg, with daily game drives, comfortable lodges and optional Panorama Route stops.

Swaziland (Eswatini)

1–4 day tours through Mlilwane, Ezulwini Valley, cultural villages and craft routes, often combined with Mozambique or Kruger.

Mozambique

Coastal routes to Maputo, Catembe and Ponta do Ouro, focusing on warm Indian Ocean beaches, seafood and cultural experiences.

Cape Town & Winelands

Tailor-made Cape Town stays with Table Mountain, Cape Point, penguins and Winelands, often linked with a Kruger safari.

Lesotho & Sani Pass

Mountain routes into Lesotho, including scenic Sani Pass, rural villages and highland viewpoints.

Namibia & Victoria Falls

Selected longer regional routes, often combining Namibia or Victoria Falls with your South Africa safari and overland plans.

Why Travel with Big Six Tour Safaris

  • Personal contact from start to finish
You deal directly with me when planning your tour – there is no large call centre or anonymous booking system.
  • Realistic, honest advice
I will always be open about what is feasible in your timeframe, which routes are comfortable, and where it may be better to slow down or add an extra night.
  • Small groups and private tours
Most tours are for couples, families or small groups who appreciate flexibility and attention to detail.
  • Local insight from a Johannesburg base
Being based in Johannesburg makes it easy to arrange airport pick-ups, day tours and connections to longer routes around the region.

A Note from Pieter

“My aim is not to sell as many tours as possible, but to help each guest enjoy a journey that feels right for them. If I think a certain route or pace will not suit your needs, I will say so honestly and suggest alternatives.

I look forward to welcoming you to Southern Africa and sharing some of the places that have meant a great deal to me over the years.”
