KRUGER SAFARI GUIDE
The complete packing guide for first-time visitors to Kruger National Park. Learn what clothing, equipment and essentials to bring for a comfortable safari experience.
Kruger National Park stretches nearly 350 km from south to north and is one of Africa's largest wildlife reserves. The map below shows the main gates, rest camps and safari routes used by visitors travelling from Johannesburg.
Safari Weather Guide
Kruger National Park can be visited throughout the year, but weather conditions vary significantly between summer and winter. Use this guide to decide what clothing and equipment to pack for your safari.
| Season | Months | Temperature | What to Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Oct – Apr | 20°C – 35°C+ | Light clothing, hat, sunscreen, rain jacket |
| Autumn | Apr – May | 15°C – 30°C | Light layers and comfortable walking shoes |
| Winter | May – Aug | 5°C – 28°C | Warm jacket, beanie, gloves for morning drives |
| Spring | Sep – Oct | 15°C – 32°C | Light clothing with a warm layer for mornings |
Safari Tip: Early morning game drives often feel much colder than daytime temperatures. Dressing in layers allows you to stay comfortable from sunrise until late afternoon.
Choose lightweight, comfortable clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, olive green, beige and brown. Avoid bright colours and camouflage clothing. Early morning game drives can be cool while midday temperatures can become very warm.
Winter mornings in Kruger can be surprisingly cold. Bring a warm fleece jacket, beanie, gloves and long trousers for sunrise game drives.
Summer is hot with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Light clothing, sunscreen and insect repellent become essential.
A good camera and binoculars can greatly improve your safari experience. Many wildlife sightings happen at a distance and binoculars help you enjoy birds, predators and other wildlife in greater detail.
Always carry your passport, travel insurance documents, booking confirmations, emergency contact details and any required medication.
Avoid bringing excessive luggage, bright clothing, expensive jewellery and unnecessary valuables. Pack light and focus on comfort.
Safari Essentials
Use this checklist before leaving for Kruger National Park. Most safari lodges and game reserves are in remote areas, so it is best to pack everything you may need before departure.
